New Mural Celebrates Peace Corps’ Global Impact at UVM

By Ty Dávila Research Contributor at the New Lines Institute

The University of Vermont has long been recognized for its strong connection to the Peace Corps, consistently ranking among the nation’s top institutions for volunteer participation. In 2018, UVM achieved the No. 2 spot for Peace Corps involvement, and in 2025, the university was ranked third among medium-sized schools, reflecting a campus culture deeply committed to global service and supporting communities in need. This enduring dedication helps cultivate students who engage meaningfully with the world beyond Vermont.

Since 1961, the Peace Corps has been a significant part of campus life, shaping generations of students who pursue international service. To celebrate this legacy, a new mural on campus, envisioned by Arminda King and brought to life by Vermont artist Dorie Keck, honors both the global reach of the Peace Corps and its lasting impact on the UVM community. Arminda King, when interviewed, said “This would give back to both the University of Vermont and the Peace Corps.” When it comes to artistic contributions,  this sparks passion and demonstrates the long-lasting impact even outside of The Peace Corps.

The mural’s design is striking in both its symbolism and execution. Its earth-toned palette of blues, browns, and greenery represents regions around the world where the Peace Corps has made a difference. There isn’t one main focus on an area either. It incorporates Turmeric from Zambia, Russian-Olive from Moldova, Beach Naupaka from Vietnam, even Orchids from Columbia, plus many others.

Beyond the colors themselves, the artwork conveys a larger message of human interconnectedness. It illustrates that, despite diverse cultures and landscapes, people share a common pursuit of a more prosperous and sustainable future. For visitors and students alike, the mural serves as a visual reminder of the university’s global ethos and the transformative power of service.

While the mural celebrates decades of Peace Corps history at UVM, the commitment continues today through active student engagement around the globe. In 2025, 19 Catamounts (alumni of UVM) are serving in 14 countries, including Cameroon, Nepal, Jamaica, and North Macedonia. Their work reflects the university community’s dedication to making a tangible difference, one community at a time, and serves as a reminder that UVM students are part of a larger story of global engagement and connection.
