National Peace Corps Association Applauds Passage of Language to Implement Peace Corps Equity Act

The National Peace Corps Association (NPCA) today praised the inclusion of language to implement the Peace Corps Equity Act as part of federal omnibus appropriations bill passed earlier this week by Congress and signed into law by President Obama. The language – championed in legislation introduced by New Hampshire Senator Jeanne Shaheen and New York Congresswoman Nita Lowey – fixes an inequity in the treatment and support of female Peace Corps Volunteers. For the past two years, these volunteers were singled out as the only individuals serving our nation overseas in extended term assignments who were denied support should they choose to terminate a pregnancy in narrow and rare circumstances involving rape, incest and life endangerment.
